Marine API Valve Standards

Marine API (American Petroleum Institute) Valve is a set of industry guidelines and specifications that define the design, manufacturing, and performance requirements for marine valves used in offshore and maritime applications. These standards ensure the safe and reliable operation of valves in challenging marine environments, where factors such as corrosion, high pressures, and extreme temperatures can be encountered.

Marine API Standard Valve Types

API gate valve

API gate valves are typically designed with a rising stem and a slab or wedge-shaped gate that moves up and down to control the flow of fluid. The gate is guided by the stem, which rises and lowers as the valve is operated. The marine gate valves are available in various sizes and pressure classes to accommodate different system requirements.

American standard gate valves are manufactured using high-quality materials that can withstand challenging operating conditions. Common materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and exotic alloys. These valves are designed to handle high-pressure and high-temperature applications, with pressure ratings typically ranging from 150 to 2500 pounds per square inch (psi).

API globe valve

API marine globe valves are typically designed with a globe-shaped body and a movable plug or disc that controls the flow of fluid. The plug is connected to a stem, which moves linearly to open or close the valve. The design allows for precise control of flow rates and pressure. API globe valve is manufactured using materials that can withstand demanding operating conditions.

American standard globe valves adhere to specific standards set by the API, such as API 600 (steel globe valves) and API 623 (corrosion-resistant globe valves). Marine API globe valves can be manually operated or equipped with actuation mechanisms for remote or automated control. Actuators, including electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic systems, can be integrated to facilitate efficient operation and integration into control systems.

API check valve

The primary function of api standard marine check valve is to prevent backflow or reverse flow of fluid within a piping system. When the flow direction changes, the check valve automatically closes to block the reverse flow, ensuring the integrity and safety of the system.

API check valves adhere to specific standards set by the API, such as API 6D (pipeline valves) and API 594 (butt-welding ends, flanged, lug, wafer check valves). These standards define the design, materials, manufacturing, and testing requirements to ensure the reliability, performance, and safety of check valves in different industrial applications.

Floating ball API valve

Marine floating ball valves provide excellent shut-off capabilities. When the valve is closed, the ball is pressed against the valve seat, creating a tight seal and preventing any leakage or flow of fluid through the valve. API floating ball valves adhere to specific standards set by the API, such as API 6D (pipeline valves) and API 608 (metal ball valves – flanged, threaded, and welding ends).
